What does a botanist do exactly?

ive just recently started looking into the career as a botanist. im only in the 11th grade, but id like to know which courses i should take if i wanted to pursue a career in this feild. so i was just wondering what a botanist does exactly, and what different types of jobs there are in that feild. i saw 'the medicine man' the other day, he was a botanist, is the life of a botanist anything like that? not the finding a cure for cancer part.. but the fact that he searched for unknown plants in new areas, like rainforests
