What element absorbs water?

We did a chemistry lab and we used hydrates, a crucible, and bunsen burner to remove all the water from the hydrate [MgSO4]. We put the crucible above the flame for 5 minutes and then put the crucible in a desiccator that had these "drying agent" crystal things at the bottom to remove more excess water. What could have been in the drying agents?
