Is it possible to grow plant bulbs in a jar till they big enough for me to put in tank? fish are eating them?

I have my plant bulbs in a small jar because they were getting munched on by my platys. I put fish water and gravel in it. And doing small water changes. Except that I'm putting fish water in after I take some out cause plants need fish dodo right?
